Industrial Technology Education


Industrial technology is an applied field that combines engineering principles, modern manufacturing, and practical design to solve real-world technical problems. It spans diverse technical disciplines, including woodworking, metalworking, computer-aided design (CAD), mechatronics, and automated systems. Through this area of study, students learn how physical products and automated processes are conceptualized, engineered, built, and maintained.

 

The Williams Bay High School Industrial Technology program provides students with hands-on, project-based learning experiences using industry-standard equipment and tools. Students can choose elective pathways ranging from foundational design and fabrication to advanced building trades and smart automation. By enrolling in these courses, students build practical trade skills, explore technical careers, and have the opportunity to earn transcripted college credit and industry-recognized certifications directly in-house.

Course Description Guide

  • This course is designed to give the students a wide variety of problem-solving experiences. The following areas of focus will include: Basic Woodworking, Basic Metalworking, Transportation, Mechanisms, Manufacturing, and Environmental. Most of the projects will be assigned; however, the students will occasionally have the ability to create projects on their own. The projects will vary in length from one class period to four weeks and can be spontaneous. Some of the projects will require some Computer Aided Design, Research and Development, Metalworking, Woodworking, and Advanced Manufacturing. Students will be exploring several different career opportunities along the way.

  • Transcripted Credit with Gateway and SACA Certification

    In this course, Students are introduced to microprocessor controlled electromechanical systems. Students will be introduced to Industry 4.0 standards including print reading, precision measurement, mechanical drives, fluid power, AC/DC Electric, relay controls, smart sensors, and robot programming. Upon completion of the course, learners will understand what technicians do in the workplace and how industry utilizes Mechatronics in advanced manufacturing. Upon completion of this course's final assessment, students will receive an industry recognized SACA 100-certification.

  • Transcripted Credit with Gateway and SACA Certification

    Students are introduced to basic concepts of industrial computer-controlled systems. The learner explores various types of programming using robots and PLC and participates in lab experiments designed to introduce programming principles, electronic inputs and outputs (analog and digital), and communication between system components including Ethernet protocols. Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to explain how the control processes are utilized to automate manufacturing facilities

  • Transcripted Credit with Gateway and SACA Certification

    This is an introductory course to programming FANUC industrial robots using a handheld teach pendant. Students will learn about a robot cell environment, robot components, basic operation, safety considerations, and programming concepts. Skills will be developed through setting up, creating, and modifying programs that are applicable for assembly, pick-and-place, welding, and a variety of other industrial processes. Upon completion of this course's final assessment, students will receive two separate industry recognized, SACA and Nocti certifications. This course is open to any student in grades 11-12; however, students will need to have a good understanding of math and science to be successful.

  • This course provides the theory and practical experience for arc and gas welding techniques. Students will learn fundamental techniques with SMAW (Stick Welding), GMAW (MIG Welding), Plasma Cutting, Oxy-Fuel Cutting, and GTAW (TIG Welding). An emphasis is placed on basic safety, equipment usage, print reading, and proper procedures. The majority of welding being explored will be done using ferrous metals.

  • This course will explore the various areas of the building trades, industry, and related home maintenance activities. Emphasis on Rough-Framing Carpentry. This is a hands-on lab class whereby students will get a chance to gain an understanding and feeling for each of the building trades. This class will help you decide on which trade you may want to pursue as a career or will give you the knowledge needed to be a homeowner. This course is recommended for students who are interested in owning a house or working in the construction trades.

  • This course will cover most areas of a 4-stroke small engine utilizing Honda brand engines. Students will be exposed to 2-stroke engine theory, but emphasis will be on the tear down and assembly of a Honda GX Series 4 stroke engine. Students will develop techniques and strategies for small engine tune-up and maintenance with a standard push-lawn mower and snowblower. This course will also highlight an introduction to the field of automotive mechanics. Recommended for students that desire kinesthetic learning

  • This course will introduce students to the industry of woodworking. This is a one-semester class that will teach students how to safely operate tools and machinery as well as learn the basics of woodworking. Students will be constructing a series of wood projects that highlight different skills and techniques.

  • In this course students will be introduced to the basic fundamentals of Cabinet Making with different types of wood (including sheet materials), adhesives, fasteners, and finishes while completing several useful projects. Students will learn about advanced joinery techniques and cabinet construction. Students will learn to create project plans with the use of CAD Software. Students will learn about careers in woodworking, the anatomy of a board, common and less common woodworking techniques and other topics related to the woodworking industry.

  • This course is designed to give the student practical experience in the woodworking field. There will be a variety of required and elective projects. though students will be able to create their own project to work on independently. This is a capstone course for woodworking where students will be able to create their own project to work on independently.

Building & Trades Academy

Building Trades Academy is a unique opportunity for juniors and seniors to explore construction careers. Spaces are limited for these exciting classes (max. 20). The class is held one night a week from 6:00–9:00 p.m. beginning in early September. It is a 2-year program leading to a Wisconsin Skills Standard Certificate in Construction or Advanced Standing in Technical College.
